Description

Sauckel acknowledges his enslavement of 5 million people but denies knowledge of any atrocities

ALS in German, signed "Fritz Sauckel," eight pages, 8 x 11.5, no date but circa 1945. A lengthy self-exculpation written by Sauckel shortly after his capture and imprisonment, addressed to the proper authorities at Camp Baerenkeller. Sauckel admits his own adherence to the Nazi program and his position as head of the Labor Procurement Service, acknowledging his connection to the concentration camps and other atrocities after the fact of his capture. He nevertheless denies any knowledge of the conditions inside them, stating that he only became aware of their nature afterward, and argues at length that his position gave him no real power to improve conditions for the workers under his authority, using the worn phrase that he did everything "in his power" to help them. In fine condition. Sauckel was convicted on two counts, war crimes and crimes against humanity, and hanged October 16, 1946.
