Description

Papen formally names his defense attorneys before the International Military Tribunal at Nuremberg

ALS in German, signed “F. v. Papen,” one page, 8 x 8.5, October 20, 1945. Handwritten letter to the General Secretary of the International Military Tribunal at Nuremberg, in full (translated): "I request that the following be designated counsel in my behalf: 1) Dr. Karl Sarre, Berlin, 2) Dr. Gustaf von Scanzoni, Munich." Backed by lightweight cardstock and in fine condition, with a closed tear to the right edge.

Written just weeks before the opening of the International Military Tribunal, this letter records Franz von Papen formally naming his preferred defense counsel as he prepared to answer charges of conspiracy and crimes against peace. The former German chancellor was ultimately represented at Nuremberg by Dr. Egon Kubuschok and was one of only three defendants acquitted by the Tribunal, which found insufficient evidence that he had participated in the planning of aggressive war.
