Description

FDC with a cachet honoring the 25th anniversary of the United States Savings Bonds, postmarked at Sioux City, Iowa, on October 26, 1966, signed in ink and ballpoint by five American generals from World War II: “Omar N. Bradley, General of the Army,” “M. B. Ridgway, Gen. US Army, Rtd,” “Mark W. Clark, General U.S. Army (ret.),” “Lucius D. Clay, Gen USA (Ret),” and “A. C. Wedemeyer, Gen. U.S.A. Ret.” In fine condition.

Omar N. Bradley (1893–1981): He commanded First Army and then 12th Army Group in Western Europe, became Army Chief of Staff, served as the first Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and was promoted to five-star General of the Army in 1950.

Matthew B. Ridgway (1895–1993): Commander of the 82nd Airborne Division in Sicily and Normandy and XVIII Airborne Corps later in the war. He subsequently commanded the Eighth Army in Korea, succeeded MacArthur in the Far East, served as Supreme Allied Commander Europe, and became Army Chief of Staff.

Mark W. Clark (1896–1984): Fifth Army commander during the Italian campaign, later commander of the 15th Army Group, and subsequently commander of United Nations forces in Korea.

Lucius D. Clay (1897–1978): Major wartime administrator and logistics officer, but his defining historical role came afterward as military governor of the U.S. occupation zone in Germany, where he was the principal American figure associated with the Berlin Airlift. The Army confirms that he became military governor and commander in chief of American forces in Europe in 1947.

Albert C. Wedemeyer (1896–1989): Important War Department strategist who, after Stilwell's departure in 1944, became commanding general of U.S. Forces, China Theater, and chief of staff to Chiang Kai-shek.
