Description

"Poor blind creatures that we are! Heaven, unmask the impostors, and compel their barbarous hearts to lay themselves open to the eyes of mankind"

Important Swiss-French philosopher and writer (1712-1778) who held that the individual is essentially good but usually corrupted by society. ALS in French, signed “J. J. Rousseau,” one page, 6.5 x 8.5, March 14, 1770. Handwritten letter to the Marquis de Beffroy, Governor of Bourgoin, thanking him for his hospitality during Rousseau's stay in the region. At the head of the letter, Rousseau has penned a striking quatrain reflecting his growing sense of persecution (translated): "Poor blind creatures that we are! Heaven, unmask the impostors, and compel their barbarous hearts to lay themselves open to the eyes of mankind."

He then asks the Marquis to forward an enclosed packet to the Chevalier de Menon before expressing his heartfelt gratitude for the kindness shown to him and his wife during their stay: "Please accept my very sincere thanks for all the kindness you have lavished upon me during my stay in this country."

Speaking on behalf of both himself and Thérèse Levasseur, Rousseau explains that, although they had wished to pay their respects in person, they refrain from doing so lest they "revive our regrets and weaken the resolutions we have taken," assuring Beffroy that their gratitude remains undiminished. In fine condition.

This letter belongs to the final decade of Rousseau's life, a period marked by repeated changes of residence following years of controversy and exile. The poignant verse introducing the letter echoes the themes of injustice and persecution that increasingly occupied his thoughts, while the warm expressions of thanks reveal the deep appreciation he retained for those who offered him friendship and protection. A fine and attractive Rousseau letter, uniting a reflective autograph poem with a graceful expression of personal gratitude.
