Description

Zachary Taylor concludes his 1848 presidential campaign: "I esteem much...the assurance you give me of your support in the approaching canvass"

LS signed “Z. Taylor,” one page, 8.75 x 10.75, November 2, 1848. Letter to Nathaniel Miller of Franklin, Massachusetts, in full: "I take pleasure in acknowledging the receipt of your letter of the 17th October, with enclosed slips containing several speeches, delivered at the North. Accept my sincere thanks for both favors; I esteem much this act of kindness & the assurance you give me of your support in the approaching canvass." In fine condition.

Written just five days before the presidential election of 1848, this letter finds Zachary Taylor in the closing moments of his successful campaign as the Whig nominee. A celebrated Mexican-American War general with little prior political experience, Taylor relied heavily on supporters and local campaign organizations to circulate speeches and promote his candidacy; here, he warmly acknowledges such efforts in the North and expresses gratitude for Miller’s promised support in the “approaching canvass.” Taylor defeated Democrat Lewis Cass and Free Soil candidate Martin Van Buren on November 7, 1848.
