Description

Davenport desk from the presidential yacht USS Sequoia, attributed to its furnishings during President Richard Nixon’s administration, measuring 21.5 x 33 x 22. The wooden desk has a slanted writing surface with a dark leather inset that lifts to reveal a storage compartment and eight small drawers. A hinged compartment at the rear opens to a long storage well, while four larger drawers line each side above carved supports and turned feet. Two engraved U.S. property plaques are affixed to the desk, one reading “U.S. PROPERTY NIXON 18” and the other “PROPERTY OF U.S. USS SEQUOIA.” In fine condition, with scattered surface wear and some dents and scratches, including to the writing inset.

A copy of a letter addressed to the consignor states that Mrs. Nixon presented the desk to White House photographer George J. Szabo in appreciation for his assistance during her travels and that the desk was removed from the presidential yacht. The consignor purchased it from Szabo in 2005. Accompanied by copies of the letter, Szabo’s statement concerning White House furniture, and a photograph of Szabo with Harry S. Truman.
