White House china cup from the administrations of Lyndon B. Johnson and Richard Nixon, manufactured by Franciscan as part of a service ordered for the Executive Mansion in 1966. The elegant porcelain teacup, 2.5˝ tall, is decorated with silver rims, the silver seal of the President of the United States, and a silver-trimmed handle. The underside bears the maker’s mark, "Franciscan Masterpiece China." In very fine condition.
This style of china was intended for use in the White House’s West Wing and Oval Office and reportedly continued in service under President Nixon, including aboard the presidential aircraft Spirit of ’76, better known by its call sign, Air Force One. The china appears as "Illustration 48.1" in "China, Glass & Tableware", June 1966, captioned: "Official seal of The President of the United States is applied to Franciscan Masterpiece China ordered recently for the White House."
