Large circa 1955 matte-finish 11.5 x 15.25 portrait photo of Pablo Picasso, picturing the artist holding a lit cigarette and wearing a V-neck knit sweater over a collared shirt and tie, signed and inscribed in the lower border in red crayon, “Pour Monsieur Pierre-Andre Weill, Picasso.” In fine condition, with some wear to the trimmed edges, and light dampstaining to the lower left.
The reverse of the photograph bears the stamp of noted French photographer Robert Doisneau, who photographed Picasso repeatedly during the early to mid-1950s, most notably during a 1952 sitting at Vallauris commissioned by the magazine Point de Vue. The photograph's recipient, Pierre-André Weill, and his wife, Lucie Weill, were fixtures of the postwar Paris gallery world. Lucie Weill founded her gallery at 6, rue Bonaparte in Paris in 1930, closely associated with Éditions Au Pont des Arts, and over four decades the couple exhibited and published deluxe editions for artists including Picasso and Max Ernst. Weill published several Max Ernst portfolios in the early 1970s, including Aux Petits Agneaux. Photographs by Edward Quinn place Pierre-André Weill with Picasso in Cannes in 1959, identifying him as a publisher of the artist's deluxe editions.
