Description

Civil War-dated ALS, one page, 4.25 x 7, September 19, 1861. Addressed from Buffalo, New York, a handwritten letter to F. A. Kilton: “In answer to your inquiries I would state that Thomas Corwin was appointed Secy. of the Treasury in July 1850, and held the office till the 3d of March 1853.” In fine condition. Corwin (1794–1865) was a prominent Ohio Whig politician who served as governor of Ohio, U.S. senator, and Secretary of the Treasury under President Millard Fillmore. Fillmore appointed him in July 1850, and he remained at the Treasury through the end of Fillmore's administration in March 1853. He later returned to Congress and was serving as Abraham Lincoln's minister to Mexico when Fillmore wrote this letter in September 1861.
