TLS signed “Thos. A. Edison" with his classic 'umbrella' signature, one page, 8.5 x 11, From the Laboratory of Thomas A. Edison (Orange, N. J.) letterhead, July 12, 1927. Letter to S. L. Whitestone, Comptroller of the General Electric Company, in full: "It is very interesting to read of your early use of the Ediphone in your letter of July 8, which Mr. Durand has handed to me, and I want to assure you that I appreciate your kindly interest in our product, of which Mr. Durand tells me. Thank you for your congratulations and good wishes." Affixed to the lower left is a gold-and-blue Ediphone Golden Jubilee seal, featuring a portrait of Edison and commemorating “50 Years of Progress.” In fine condition, with some wrinkling and toning to the right side.
The Ediphone was Edison’s cylinder-based dictation machine, developed for office use to record correspondence for later transcription. The Golden Jubilee seal affixed to this letter commemorates the 50th anniversary of Edison’s invention of the phonograph, traditionally dated to his 1877 tinfoil recording of ‘Mary Had a Little Lamb.’ Edison’s company marked the 1927 jubilee across its product lines, including a commemorative cylinder titled ‘Fiftieth Anniversary of the Ediphone (1877–1927),’ while Edison himself was recorded reminiscing about his first phonograph recording during the anniversary celebrations that year.
