Description

"With Watergate and the tragedy in Vietnam those were difficult times"—Ford reflects on his years in the White House

ALS signed “Jerry Ford,” one page, 6.25 x 8.5, personal letterhead, October 14, [1994]. Handwritten letter to Senator Paul Simon, in part: "I deeply appreciate your generous comments about my service in the White House. With Watergate and the tragedy in Vietnam those were difficult times. With the understanding and help of many like you in the Nation's Capital we pulled things together in a time of crisis. Betty and I were honored to have the opportunity to serve. Betty's doing a great job as 'hands-on' chairman of the Betty Ford Center. We thank you for your many kindnesses and your friendship." In fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope, featuring a pre-printed free frank.

Written two decades after his presidency, this reflective letter offers Ford’s own concise assessment of his role in guiding the nation through the aftermath of Watergate and the closing chapter of the Vietnam War. His remark that “we pulled things together in a time of crisis” captures the central theme of his presidency: restoring stability and public confidence during one of the most turbulent periods in modern American history.
