Description

Partly-printed DS as president, one page, 16 x 20, December 9, 1918. President Wilson appoints Emile P. Moses, "by and with the advice and consent of the Senate," as "a Major in the Marine Corps." Signed at the conclusion in ink by President Woodrow Wilson, and countersigned by Secretary of the Navy Josephus Daniels. The blue seal affixed at the bottom remains intact. In fine condition, with intersecting folds.

Emile P. Moses (1880–1965) was a distinguished Marine Corps officer whose 40-year career included expeditionary service in Nicaragua, Mexico, China, and the Pacific. Rising to major general, he later commanded the Marine Corps Recruit Depot at Parris Island during World War II and played an important role in developing the amphibious tractors—later known as Landing Vehicle Tracked, or LVTs—that proved essential to American operations in the Pacific.
