Official gubernatorial document issued during Adams's tenure as governor of Massachusetts, certifying that “Samuel Barrett Esq.” had been duly commissioned and sworn as “a Justice of the Peace & Notary Public within and for the County of Suffolk,” and directing that his official acts and attestations “full faith and credit is and ought to be given in and out of Court.” Signed in the left margin by Governor Samuel Adams and countersigned at the conclusion by Secretary of the Commonwealth John Avery, Jr., with the embossed paper seal of the Commonwealth affixed at the upper left. Professionally matted and framed with a portrait and engraved plaque to an overall size of 26.25 x 23. In very good to fine condition, with edgewear, including creases, toning, and short tears.
Issued just two months into Samuel Adams's first full elected term as governor of Massachusetts, this document reflects the transition of one of the American Revolution's foremost architects from revolutionary agitator to chief executive of the Commonwealth. After serving for years as lieutenant governor under John Hancock, Adams succeeded to the governorship upon Hancock's death in October 1793 and won election in his own right the following year. Countersigned by Secretary of the Commonwealth John Avery, Jr., a fellow Son of Liberty and founding member of Boston's Loyal Nine, the organization that helped launch colonial resistance to the Stamp Act in 1765 alongside Adams, the document unites two longtime revolutionary leaders whose partnership spanned the struggle for independence and the establishment of Massachusetts's new state government.
