Boston physician, orator, and patriot (1741–1775) who was a pivotal figure in the early revolutionary agitation in Massachusetts and was killed in combat at the Battle of Bunker Hill. Crisp circa 1775 Revolutionary War-era ink signature as president of the Massachusetts Provincial Congress, "Jos. Warren,” on a 4 x 1 slip clipped from a larger document. Archivally double-matted and framed with two images and a plaque to an overall size of 31 x 24. In fine condition, with show-through from writing to the reserve.
Warren enlisted Paul Revere and William Dawes on April 18, 1775, to leave Boston and spread the alarm that the British were setting out to raid the town of Concord and arrest rebel leaders John Hancock and Samuel Adams. Warren participated the following day in the Battles of Lexington and Concord. He had been commissioned as a major general in the colony's militia shortly before the June 17, 1775 Battle of Bunker Hill but Warren chose to serve in the battle as a private soldier and was killed in combat.
