Description

Financing the first transcontinental railroad—an exceedingly rare 1868 Central Pacific Railroad bond signed by Leland Stanford

Rare and historically important DS, signed “Leland Stanford,” one page, 17.25 x 12.25, January 1, 1868. Bond of the Central Pacific Railroad Company of California in the amount of $1000, payable at a rate of 6% "in United States Gold Coin…This Bond being one of the Series I of First Mortgage Bonds which the said Company is authorized to issue upon that portion of their Rail Road line lying eastwardly of the eastern boundary line of the State of California." Neatly signed at the conclusion in ink by Leland Stanford as president, and countersigned by E. H. Miller, Jr., as secretary. Endorsed on the reverse by Darius Ogden Mills and William E. Barron as trustees. The gold foil seal affixed at the lower left remains intact.

Printed in black and pink, the oversized certificate is richly embellished with allegorical and industrial vignettes celebrating the transformation of the American West: at upper right, a wagon train winds through a rugged mountain pass, evoking the slow and perilous overland journey of the pioneer era; opposite, a steam locomotive races through the same dramatic landscape, presenting the railroad as the modern force that conquered distance and terrain. A harbor scene below, crowded with sailing ships and waterfront activity, further links the Central Pacific to commerce and the growing global power of the United States. In very good to fine condition, with standard cancelation holes through the signature lines, a professionally repaired tear to the lower right corner, and show-through from tape reinforcements to small fold splits on the left edge.

Issued little more than a year before the celebrated joining of the rails, this imposing bond is a direct financial instrument of the enterprise itself—a security created to raise the immense sums required to carry the Central Pacific eastward from California and through the formidable Sierra Nevada. Under the leadership of Leland Stanford and his fellow 'Big Four' investors—Collis P. Huntington, Mark Hopkins, and Charles Crocker—the company accomplished one of the defining feats of 19th-century American engineering, relying heavily upon a workforce of more than 10,000 Chinese laborers to blast tunnels, bridge ravines, and lay track through extraordinarily difficult terrain. When the Central Pacific met the Union Pacific at Promontory Summit on May 10, 1869, Stanford took part in the ceremonial driving of the Golden Spike, completing the first transcontinental railroad and inaugurating a new era of national transportation, trade, and expansion.

The historical importance of the bond is heightened by its exceptional rarity. The Central Pacific Railroad Photographic History Museum documents only a small group of surviving first mortgage bonds of this general type, representing differing series and designs. As the issued bonds were redeemed, canceled, and ordinarily destroyed, the few known survivors are believed to have been retained in the company’s own archives as documentary specimens; an estimated three to five examples are known today. Signed by Stanford and further endorsed by prominent California financier Darius Ogden Mills, this monumental and richly engraved certificate survives as both a financial artifact of the railroad’s construction and a compelling visual monument to the transformation it helped bring about.
