Three-page foldout illustration of the Norman Rockwell painting ‘Behind Apollo 11,’ 30.5 x 13.25, removed from the July 15, 1969, special Apollo 11 issue of Look magazine, signed over their respective likenesses in felt tip by the prime and backup crews of Apollo 11: Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins, and James Lovell, Fred Haise, and Bill Anders. The foldout is also signed by spacesuit technician Joseph W. Schmitt. The three-page foldout has been arranged for display, with the leftmost panel joined to the adjacent panel by a strip of clear tape along the vertical seam. In very good to fine condition, with edgewear such as tears and paper loss, light overall wrinkling, and some fading to the backup crew signatures, most notably to Anders.
Published just five days before the launch of Apollo 11, the July 15, 1969, issue of Look magazine celebrated America's first attempt to land men on the Moon. Its centerpiece was Norman Rockwell's sweeping three-page foldout, Behind Apollo 11, a dramatic tribute to the nation's astronauts from the dawn of Project Mercury through the historic Apollo program. Accompanied by reporting from The New York Times and a contribution by science fiction author Arthur C. Clarke, the commemorative issue captured the anticipation surrounding mankind's greatest voyage of exploration.
