Limited edition flown airmail cover, 9.5 x 4, numbered 22/49, signed on the left side in fountain pen, "Carried by air, Honolulu-Oakland, January 11-12, 1935, Amelia Earhart." Addressed in type to Earhart's husband, "Mr. George Palmer Putnam, Honolulu, Hawaii, U.S.A." Two postage stamps are affixed to the upper right, and the cover bears Honolulu and Oakland postal cancellations. In fine condition.
On January 11–12, 1935, Amelia Earhart became the first aviator to complete a solo flight from Hawaii to the continental United States, flying her Lockheed Vega from Honolulu to Oakland across more than 2,000 miles of open Pacific Ocean. Considered one of aviation's most dangerous routes, the crossing exceeded the distance of her celebrated 1932 solo transatlantic flight and offered no possibility of an emergency landing in the event of mechanical failure. The feat came only five weeks after Australian aviator Charles Ulm and his two-man crew disappeared while attempting the reverse journey from Oakland to Hawaii, emphasizing the extraordinary peril of Earhart's undertaking. Landing in Oakland after approximately 18 hours aloft, she became the first person to fly solo and nonstop across both the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. One of only 49 commemorative covers carried aboard the historic flight and personally signed by Earhart, this example is additionally addressed to her husband and longtime promoter, George Palmer Putnam, lending it an especially intimate association with one of the greatest achievements of her aviation career.
