Sought-after limited edition flown airmail cover, 6.5 x 3.5, carried on Amelia Earhart’s historic transatlantic flight from Newfoundland to Ireland on May 20-21, 1932, numbered 13/50, signed in the lower left below the stamped cachet in fountain pen by Earhart. Addressed in type to her fellow aviation pioneer Bernt Balchen. Two stamps are affixed to the cover: one three-halfpence revenue stamp postmarked at the site of her landing, Londonderry, Northern Ireland, two days after completing her flight on May 23rd; and one desirable five-cent US airmail postage stamp, postmarked at Grand Central Station, May 13th. In fine condition, with slight creasing.
On May 20–21, 1932, exactly five years after Charles Lindbergh's epoch-making crossing, Amelia Earhart became the first woman, and only the second person after Lindbergh, to complete a nonstop solo flight across the Atlantic Ocean, flying her Lockheed Vega from Harbor Grace, Newfoundland, to a pasture near Londonderry, Northern Ireland. Battling severe weather, mechanical problems, and ice accumulation that forced her to abandon her intended destination of Paris, Earhart nevertheless completed one of the defining flights of the Golden Age of Aviation, an achievement that earned her the Distinguished Flying Cross and established her as one of the world's foremost aviators.
One of only 50 commemorative covers carried aboard the flight and signed by Earhart, this example is additionally addressed to fellow aviation pioneer Bernt Balchen, the famed polar aviator and transatlantic pilot who assisted in preparing Earhart and her aircraft for the historic crossing.
