Just three months earlier, on July 9, 1967, Lee had coined the name ‘Jeet Kune Do’ for the martial arts philosophy he had spent years developing after rejecting the rigid conventions of traditional kung fu. That same summer, The Green Hornet, the television series that introduced Lee to American audiences as Kato, came to an end, its final episode airing on July 14, 1967. With his acting work abruptly curtailed, Lee devoted himself to the Los Angeles Jun Fan Gung Fu Institute he had opened earlier that year at 628 College Street in Chinatown, where he refined his evolving philosophy and trained students, including Steve McQueen and James Coburn.
