ALS signed “Ch. Darwin,” one page, 5 x 8, Down, Beckenham, Kent letterhead, November 10, 1874. Handwritten letter to the French anthropologist and historian Alexis Giraud-Teulon, in full: “I am much obliged to you for your kindness in having sent your ‘Origines de la Famille.’ The subject is a most interesting one, & as soon as I have finished two books which I am now reading, I will commence with yours. With much respect & my best thanks.” In fine condition. The handwritten date at the upper left may initially appear to read "1894," but is in fact "1874."
Just three days before the publication of the second edition of The Descent of Man on November 13, 1874, Charles Darwin thanks French anthropologist and historian Alexis Giraud-Teulon for sending him a copy of his newly published Les Origines de la Famille (The Origins of the Family). The date is corroborated by another letter Darwin wrote that same day to Scottish anthropologist John Ferguson McLennan, in which he noted, 'Giraud-Teulon has sent me his Les Origines de la Famille just published. I have not read it, but can see that it relates to your subject.' An interesting association piece, Giraud-Teulon's book appears to have drawn inspiration from Darwin's 1859 masterpiece On the Origin of Species, while its title closely anticipates Friedrich Engels's influential 1884 work The Origin of the Family, Private Property and the State. Together, the two books are regarded as pioneering studies of the origins and evolution of the family.
