Description

"Alphonse Capone"—the 19-year-old gangster signs in the pre-Prohibition era

Fountain pen signature, "Alphonse Capone,” on a white 7.25 x 1 slip, dated September 28, 1918. Handsomely double-matted and framed with a portrait to an overall size of 15 x 16. In very fine condition.

This early “Alphonse Capone” signature predates the Prohibition era that would transform the young Brooklyn-born tough into America’s most infamous gangster. Within a few years, Al Capone would move to Chicago and rise through Johnny Torrio’s criminal organization, ultimately becoming the public face of organized crime during the Roaring Twenties. An unusually early example signed with his formal given name, this piece captures Capone before the legend of 'Scarface' had fully taken shape.
