Description

Vintage luncheon menu, 5.25 x 8.5, held by the Critics' Circle Film Section in honor of Charlie Chaplin at the Empress Club in London, on October 10, 1952, signed prominently in blue ballpoint by Chaplin. The cover features a charming printed illustration of Chaplin as his iconic Tramp character. Double-matted with a photo of Chaplin as the Tramp to an overall size of 17 x 13.75. In fine condition, with a few small stains, and a central horizontal fold.

Held on October 10, 1952, this luncheon took place during one of the most consequential moments of Chaplin's career. Less than a month earlier, Chaplin, his wife Oona, and their children had departed New York aboard the RMS Queen Elizabeth for the London premiere of Limelight when U.S. Attorney General James P. McGranery revoked Chaplin's reentry permit while he was still at sea. Rather than contest the decision, Chaplin chose to settle permanently in Switzerland.
