Soviet composer (1906–1975) whose fifteen symphonies occupy a place of central performance in the orchestral literature of the twentieth century. AMQS signed from Dmitri Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 6 in B minor, Op. 54, one page, Hotel Victoria letterhead, 7.5 x 6.9, Rome, May 17, 1958. Shostakovich pens three measures in blue ink from the theme of the first movement, marked “Moderato” at the head, and adds an autograph inscription in Cyrillic to Joseph Nicolas: “To Zhosefu Niklasu with best wishes from D. Shostakovich.” In fine condition.
Composed between April and October 1939, Shostakovich’s Sixth Symphony followed the immense public success of his Fifth but confounded expectations with its unconventional structure and shifting emotional world. Instead of a heroic, monumental continuation of the Fifth, the Sixth opens with a long, brooding Largo before moving into two shorter, sharply contrasting fast movements—an unsettling succession of moods that has often been understood against the anxious political atmosphere of the late 1930s. The quoted “Moderato” theme from the first movement connects this signed leaf directly to one of the composer’s most enigmatic major symphonic works.
