Description

Outlaw and train robber (1871-1937) who was the youngest of the brothers that made up the legendary Dalton Gang of the Old West. He was sentenced to life in prison after an attempted bank robbery in 1892, but was pardoned 14 years later, after which he became a reformed, respectable member of society. After moving to California to work in real estate, he also embarked on a career in the arts, capitalizing on his notoriety to publish books and begin a career in Hollywood. TLS, one page, 8.5 x 11, personal letterhead, December 3, 1933. Letter to John B. Tackett of Coffeyville, Kansas, in full (spelling and grammar retained): “I vever kept a coppy of the letter I wrote to Haldeman-Jullus. As well as I remember I only asked him if he would be interested in publishinh the book under the condition prevailing but I have not heared from him yet. All I want is for it to be publishes on a per- centage. Get the best offer you can and then we will consider it. Dont beleive I have made anyone any kind of an offer only what I have told you. I do not think of anything else at pre sentto write so, will ring off.” Dalton adds a postscript: “P.S. Mrs Dalton wants to know what that medicine did for your brother.” In fine condition, with a small partial separation to an upper fold. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope. The recipient, Coffeyville photographer and theater owner John B. Tackett, was a longtime associate of Emmett Dalton who photographed the aftermath of the infamous 1892 Coffeyville raid and later collaborated with Dalton on books and films recounting the exploits of the Dalton Gang.
