Rockwell with the hope, that the events of the past weeks, and the results that may grow out of them will not make the deeds recorded herein, useless to our country—J. A. Garfield, Washington, Nov. 11th, 1876." Autographic condition: fine. Book condition: G/None, with heavy scuffing to the exterior and a cracked front hinge. Accompanied by a custom-made quarter-leather slipcase with chemise.
The 42nd Ohio Infantry was organized at Camp Chase in Columbus, Ohio in late 1861 and mustered in for three years' service on December 7, 1861, under the command of Colonel Garfield.
Lieutenant Colonel Almon F. Rockwell (1835–1903) was a U.S. Army officer uniquely remembered in history as the only known person to be present at the deathbeds of both President Abraham Lincoln in 1865 and President James A. Garfield in 1881. A close friend of Garfield—dating back to their time at Williams College—Rockwell was with Garfield constantly during the 80 days the president lingered after being shot by an assassin.
