ALS signed “H. B. Heelis,” one page, 4.5 x 7, September 19, 1938. Addressed from Sawrey, a handwritten letter to Miss Tyson: “I doubt if I shall get out for a day or two driving, owing to the shaking in the car. I have been in a good deal of pain. I am feeling much better today, and nothing serious – just got cold at the show on Thursday and did not improve matters on Friday in the damp. I think it would be best for me to buy that yellow Worcester for the same price as was offered by the dealer; I will take my chance – there is still some China etc left!” In fine condition. Accompanied by the original hand-addressed mailing envelope.
Signed “H. B. Heelis,” the married name under which Beatrix Potter conducted much of her correspondence during her three decades as a Lake District farmer, the letter offers a candid glimpse of her final years. Then seventy-two and just over five years from her death, Potter writes of lingering pain after catching a cold at a local agricultural show, the kind of event she attended regularly as a prize-winning Herdwick breeder and noted livestock judge, while also discussing the purchase of a piece of Worcester porcelain, remarking, “I will take my chance.”
