Description

White House china cup and saucer from the administrations of Lyndon B. Johnson and Richard Nixon, manufactured by Franciscan as part of a service ordered for the Executive Mansion in 1966. The elegant porcelain set consists of a 2.5˝ tall teacup and matching 5.875˝ saucer, both decorated with silver rims and the silver seal of the President of the United States; the cup features a silver-trimmed handle. Both pieces bear maker’s marks on the underside: "Franciscan Masterpiece China." In very fine condition, with no chips or cracks.

This distinctive service was intended for use in the White House’s West Wing and Oval Office and reportedly continued in service under President Nixon, including aboard the presidential aircraft Spirit of ’76, better known by its call sign, Air Force One. The china appears as "Illustration 48.1" in "China, Glass & Tableware", June 1966, captioned: "Official seal of The President of the United States is applied to Franciscan Masterpiece China ordered recently for the White House." A scarce and highly displayable relic of presidential hospitality spanning two consequential administrations.
