Double-sided 8.25 x 11.75 handbill promoting Queen's UK spring tour of 1974, their first as a headliner, which supported their forthcoming Queen II album, signed nicely in blue ink, "Best wishes, Freddie Mercury,” “Brian May,” “Roger Taylor,” and “John Deacon.” The handbill lists March tour dates and depicts the band as pictured on the gatefold of their 1974 album, Queen II, and the reverse features the now iconic album cover photograph. The consignor notes that the autographs were obtained at the Guildhall in Plymouth, England, on March 3, 1974. In fine condition, with a light fold and some light creasing to the bottom. Accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Tracks and a statement of provenance from the original recipient.
Queen II, released on March 8, 1974, was the band's first commercial and critical breakthrough: though contemporary reviews were largely hostile — Melody Maker and Record Mirror both dismissed it, and Sounds reported it had been ‘universally panned’ by critics — the album still climbed to number five on the UK charts and went on to achieve Gold status, helped by the surprise success of ‘Seven Seas of Rhye.’ That single had been rushed to release in February 1974 after Queen was offered a last-minute slot on Top of the Pops when David Bowie canceled, and it became the band's first UK hit, reaching number ten and reportedly convincing Freddie Mercury to commit to Queen as a full-time career rather than a side project.
The spring 1974 tour promoting Queen II was Queen's first headlining UK tour, beginning barely six weeks after their previous engagement supporting Mott the Hoople had ended, an unusually quick turnaround that reflected the band's growing momentum.
