Description

“I believe in prayer and I'm sure your prayers in my behalf were heeded because God certainly was watching out for me”—Reagan credits prayer and divine providence after surviving John Hinckley's 1981 assassination attempt

ALS as president, signed “RR,” one page, 6.75 x 4, no date (circa spring 1981). Handwritten letter to the staff and students of the New Life Christian Academy, in full: “To Mrs. Robbins, Mrs. Keene & Mrs. Boedmann and all your students at New Life Christian Academy, please accept my heartfelt thanks for your beautiful card. I cannot express my gratitude for your good wishes and your prayers. I believe in prayer and I'm sure your prayers in my behalf were heeded because God certainly was watching out for me. Again my thanks to all of you & God Bless you.” Double matted with a typed caption and a color photo of Reagan waving outside of the Washington Hilton on March 30, 1981, mere moments before an assassination attempt by John Hinckley, Jr.; framed together to an overall size of 14 x 18. In very fine condition.

The note was written in the aftermath of the March 30, 1981, assassination attempt on President Reagan outside the Washington Hilton Hotel in Washington, D.C. The attack was carried out by John Hinckley Jr., who sought to impress actress Jodie Foster, with whom he had become obsessively fixated. Reagan was struck by a bullet that ricocheted off his limousine and pierced his left lung, coming within inches of his heart. Three others were wounded in the attack: White House Press Secretary James Brady, Secret Service agent Timothy McCarthy, and Washington, D.C., police officer Thomas Delahanty. During his recovery, Reagan frequently expressed gratitude for the prayers and support he received and spoke openly of his belief that divine providence had played a role in his survival, sentiments reflected in this heartfelt message to students who had sent him a card and their prayers.
