TLS, one page, 8 x 10.5, United States Senate (Select Committee on Improper Activities in the Labor or Management Field) letterhead, May 8, 1959. Letter to Leonie Z. Rashen, in full: “Thank you very much for your letter and the copy of National Geographic Magazine which I read with interest. I appreciate your thoughtfulness in writing me and bringing this article to my attention.” Kennedy adds a handwritten postscript and signs with his initials, “Thank you very much for this story which I had missed—RFK.” In very good to fine condition, with some light creasing, primarily to the right side.
The letter dates to the final and most consequential phase of Robert F. Kennedy's service as chief counsel to the Senate Select Committee on Improper Activities in the Labor or Management Field. Written in May 1959, it coincides with the committee's active hearings and the congressional effort to transform years of investigations into federal labor-reform legislation. Later that year, Congress passed the Labor-Management Reporting and Disclosure Act of 1959, establishing new federal standards for union governance, financial disclosure, and internal elections, and bringing the committee's work to its legislative culmination.
