Description

Student record book of the Adelphic Union Society at Black River Academy in Ludlow, Vermont, from circa 1890–1891, 7 x 8.25, containing approximately 37 pages of handwritten constitutions, bylaws, membership rolls, and meeting minutes. Particularly notable are multiple contemporary references to future President Calvin Coolidge during his student years, including his appearance in membership rolls dated January 7, 1890, and January 27, 1891. The 1890 membership roll also includes his sister, Abigail (“Abbie”) Coolidge, who died on March 6, 1890, less than two months later.

The volume further documents Coolidge's participation in the society through several references in the meeting minutes, including his nomination to serve as president of an upcoming meeting on April 8, 1890, the subsequent record of the April 15 meeting being “called to order by the President, J. Calvin Coolidge,” and a May 13, 1890 entry noting a reading by “J. C. Coolidge.” The minutes preserve the activities of the academy's literary society, including debates, essays, recitations, musical performances, and parliamentary proceedings. In very good to fine condition, with wear to the spine and covers; interior pages are generally fine, with a couple of pages detached.

The Adelphic Union Society served as one of Black River Academy's principal literary and debating organizations, providing students with opportunities for public speaking, debate, and parliamentary practice. During 1890 and 1891, Coolidge appears repeatedly in the society's records as a member and participant in its activities while attending the Ludlow, Vermont, preparatory school prior to his enrollment at Amherst College. An exceptional early Coolidge artifact documenting the future president's student years in Vermont.
