Description

Iconic Walter Stoneman portrait of Winston Churchill at the height of World War II

Vintage matte-finish 6.5 x 7.75 portrait of Winston Churchill by Walter Stoneman, affixed to its original 7.75 x 9.75 mount, neatly signed on the mount in fountain pen, "Winston S. Churchill." Reverse bears Stoneman's credit stamp. In fine condition, with a small rusty paperclip impression to the top edge, easily matted out.

Accompanied by a September 9, 1946, typed transmittal letter from the Luxembourg Legation in London to Luxembourg Minister of Public Health Dominique Urbany, stating that Churchill had kindly signed the enclosed photograph for him, as well as an original compliments slip from Churchill's residence at 28 Hyde Park Gate reading, "With Mr. Churchill's compliments."

Walter Stoneman (1876-1958) was the chief photographer for Russell & Sons, a London-based photographic studio. He took numerous portraits of Churchill, several of which are in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery. This portrait, taken on April 1, 1941, captures the British prime minister at the height of World War II, projecting an image of steadfast resolve during Britain’s darkest hours. The image’s stark lighting, formal pose, and direct gaze emphasize Churchill’s determination and defiance in the face of Nazi aggression, qualities that had already made him an enduring symbol of wartime leadership.
