Description

Signer of the Declaration of Independence from Pennsylvania (1725–1777) who also chaired the committee that wrote the Articles of Confederation. ADS, one page, 15.25 x 5.5, May 13, 1761. Handwritten legal certification by future Declaration signer John Morton. As one of His Majesty's justices for Chester County, Pennsylvania, John Morton records the personal appearance of Jane Taylor and her acknowledgment of an indenture, certifying that she “Acknowledged the Above Indenture to be her Act and Deed” and desired “that it might be recorded as Such According to Law.” Signed at the conclusion by Morton. The left side bears contemporary endorsements in another hand concerning the execution and delivery of the deed, together with the signatures of two witnesses, and the upper right corner bears the original red wax seal. In very good to fine condition, with some light staining, and an area of loss and creasing to the central vertical fold.
