Description

Physician and signer of the Declaration of Independence from New Hampshire (1729-1795) who served as that state's governor from 1790 to 1794. ADS, signed “Josiah Bartlett, Justc Pacis,” one page, 7.5 x 5.5, September 30, 1772. Official Province of New Hampshire document addressed “To the Sheriff of the County of Rockingham, his under sheriff or deputy or either of the Constables of Kingston in said County,” authorizing the search of the dwelling house of a Kingston resident and ordering the apprehension of Hannah Welch. In part: “Complaint being made as above…in his majesty’s name to authorize and require you…to search the Dwelling House of the aforementioned John Welch of Kingston…and apprehend the said Hannah Welch and bring her before me or some other of his majesty’s justices of the peace for said County to be examined touching the premises and further dealt with according to Law.” Signed at the conclusion by Bartlett. In very good to fine condition, with irregular toning and staining, affecting only appearance. This warrant reflects Bartlett’s pre-Revolutionary judicial duties within colonial New Hampshire, documenting the routine administration of royal authority only a few years before he would become a leading advocate for American independence.

From the collection of Mark S. Robbins.
