Description

Presidential ship's pass signed by John Adams, permitting the brig Atlas to navigate international waters under U.S. protection during the final year of the Quasi-War with France

Partly-printed vellum DS as president, one page, 10 x 14.25, January 27, 1800. Scallop-topped ship’s pass, permitting a ship "the Brig Atlas, Thomas Kimball, master or commander…to pass with her Company, Passengers, [Goods] and Merchandize, without any hindrance, seizure or molesta[tion:] the said Ship appearing, by good testimony, to belong to [one or] more of the Citizens of the United States." Signed at the conclusion by John Adams. Matted and framed with an engraved plate and color portrait to an overall size of 28.75 x 22.75. In very good condition, with some staining and vellum loss to intersecting folds, and trimmed left and bottom edges, which have excised the lower portions of Adams' signature. Issued in January 1800 during the final year of the Quasi-War with France, this ship's pass reflects the challenges facing American merchant vessels as the young republic sought to safeguard its maritime commerce during the French Revolutionary Wars. By certifying a vessel's American ownership, such documents helped secure recognition of its neutral status abroad.

From the collection of Mark S. Robbins.
