Description

Manuscript DS, one page both sides, 7.75 x 9.75, March 3, 1829. Congressional recommendation submitted on behalf of Henry Walker, an applicant for a federal clerkship, stating in part that the undersigned members of Congress "beg leave to recommend" him for appointment. The document bears numerous signatures on the front and is additionally endorsed on the reverse by Polk beneath a statement reading: "We have no personal acquaintance with Mr. Walker, but from our confidence in the recommendations of others we cheerfully unite in soliciting for him the appointment requested." In very good to fine condition, with splitting to the horizontal folds, and a small name clipping remnant under Polk's signature.

Dated March 3, 1829, this recommendation was signed on the final day of John Quincy Adams's presidency and the eve of Andrew Jackson's inauguration. At the time, Polk was serving as a Tennessee congressman and one of Jackson's most loyal political allies. The document reflects the patronage system that became closely associated with the incoming Jackson administration, as office seekers and their supporters assembled endorsements from influential political figures in pursuit of federal appointments.
