Description

LS, signed “Wm. H. Harrison, Comm’dr,” one page, 4.5 x 2.25, October 7, 1796. Letter sent to the “Quarter Master,” in full: “Sir, be pleased to Issue one Quire Paper for the use of the publick.” In fine condition.

Written during William Henry Harrison's service on the northwestern frontier, this letter dates to October 1796, when the 23-year-old future president was serving at Fort Washington in present-day Cincinnati, two years after distinguishing himself as aide-de-camp to General Anthony Wayne at the Battle of Fallen Timbers. General Wayne, Harrison's commanding officer and mentor, would die two months later in December 1796. Harrison resigned his commission in 1798 and began the political career that carried him to the White House as the ninth president. Documents from this early frontier period are among the scarcest of all Harrison material.
