Description

Original vintage matte-finish 11 x 14 glamour photograph of young model Norma Jeane Dougherty, roughly a decade before becoming Hollywood icon Marilyn Monroe, posing with a shampoo bottle for Frank & Joseph's Beauty Salon. Captured during the 1940s by H. Maier Studios of Los Angeles, whose blindstamp is present in the lower right corner. In fine condition, with some light crazing. Accompanied by a full letter of authenticity from PSA/DNA, certifying it as an authentic “Type I” photograph.

In late 1945, model Norma Jeane was selected by the Blue Book agency to appear in a shampoo advertising campaign associated with Frank & Joseph's Beauty Salon. According to later accounts, photographer Raphael Wolff preferred that the young model adopt a lighter hair color for the assignment. Encouraged by her agent, Emmeline Snively, Norma Jeane agreed to the change, and hairstylist Sylvia Barnhart of Frank & Joseph's salon gradually bleached and straightened her naturally brunette hair over the following months. The transformation marked an important step in the creation of the blonde image that would soon make Marilyn Monroe one of Hollywood's most recognizable figures.
