Description

"I wrote ‘Watership Down’ simply at the behest of my two daughters, then aged nine and seven, who asked me to write down for them the story which I had told them orally"

TLS signed “Yours sincerely, Richard Adams,” one page, 7 x 9, Benwell's, 26 Church Street, Whitchurch, Hants letterhead, March 27, 1986. Letter to Mr. Brownlow, in full: “Thank you very much for your kind letter of 15th March. I much appreciate your thanks and good wishes. I think I can answer your questions simply enough. I did not want to be a writer during my days as a civil servant; and I wrote ‘Watership Down’ simply at the behest of my two daughters, then aged nine and seven, who asked me to write down for them the story which I had told them orally. Having taken the trouble to write it, I thought I would like it to be published, so I duly found a publisher. An author who treats his fans' letters with disdain doesn't deserve to have any.” Adams adds the salutation and a postscript in his own hand: “I hope you have made a full recovery. All good wishes for Easter.” In fine condition. Accompanied by a hardcover first American edition of Watership Down, published by the Macmillan Publishing Company of New York in 1972.
