Martin Esq., Editor of The Electrical World, 114 Liberty St., New York City.” In very good to fine condition, with light soiling and a vertical fold.
Postmarked from Fort Myers, Florida, on February 27, 1904, this envelope places Edison at his winter estate, Seminole Lodge, during a notable year in the city's development: 1904 saw the arrival of railroad service to Fort Myers via the Atlantic Coast Line, improving access to the southwest Florida community that Edison had frequented since the 1880s. The recipient, addressed here as “J. C. Martin,” was presumably Thomas Commerford Martin, the British-American electrical engineer and longtime editor of The Electrical World, who served in that role from 1883 to 1909. Martin's association with Edison dated back to the late 1870s, when he was connected with Edison's laboratory work. Published in New York at 114 Liberty Street, The Electrical World was among the most influential trade journals of the electrical industry, making this an appealing example of correspondence between two prominent figures in the development of electrical technology.
