Description

American Olympic Committee member’s badge issued for the Athens 1906 Intercalated Olympics. Gilt bronze, 32 x 44 mm, 25 gm (with ribbon and bar), by Dieges & Clust. The badge features Greek and U.S. shields over "Member" and the Amateur Athletic Union (A.A.U.) emblem, flanked by scrolls reading: "Olympic Games, Held at Athens, Greece, 1906." Suspended from a worn and frayed blue-and-white ribbon, which bears an upper bar pin with raised text: “American Committee.” Accompanied by its original brown presentation case.

The 1906 Intercalated Games, held in Athens from April 22nd to May 2nd, were organized as a special Olympic competition intended to be staged between the regular Olympiads. Although later excluded from the IOC's official Olympic chronology, the Games played a vital role in strengthening the Olympic movement and helped establish many of the traditions associated with modern Olympic competition. The American delegation was organized under the auspices of the Amateur Athletic Union, then the governing body of amateur sport in the United States. Produced by the prominent New York firm Dieges & Clust, this scarce committee badge survives as an early relic of American participation in one of the most influential athletic festivals of the Olympic revival.
