Description

ALS signed “A. Conan Doyle,” one page, 8 x 8, The Psychic Book Shop, Library letterhead, no date. Handwritten letter to an unidentified gentleman, in full: “I quite sympathise with your position. Your reading must take you as far as it will go. I don't know if my own two little elementary books are known to you which I include here in the list of new books. They are expressly written as firm first steps on the ladder. But the titles of the various books will help you in choice. If you had one or two friends equally interested you should be able to get your own proofs. If you should be in London I would give you the names of a few honest clairvoyants. There are others.” In very good to fine condition, with scattered stains, short edge tears, and a small area of loss to the top edge.

Written during Conan Doyle's ardent Spiritualist period, the letter offers a revealing glimpse into the author's efforts to guide newcomers toward psychic investigation. By this stage of his life, Doyle had become one of the world's foremost advocates of Spiritualism, publishing introductory works on the subject, lecturing internationally, and encouraging skeptics to seek their own "proofs" through firsthand experiences with mediums and clairvoyants. His reference to recommending "a few honest clairvoyants" reflects the deeply held convictions that occupied much of his attention in the years after creating Sherlock Holmes.
