Letter to Andrew Furuseth (1854–1938), the influential labor leader and president of the International Seamen's Union of America. In full: “I thank you sincerely for the paper you send me under date of June twenty-sixth. I think I appreciate fully the deep significance of the seamen's cause, and you may be sure that I will espouse it in every way that is possible.” In fine condition.
Accompanied by the original eight-page letter from Andrew Furuseth, urging reform of maritime labor laws and improved protections for American sailors. Furuseth's memorandum combines arguments for labor reform and maritime safety with contemporary racial concerns over the increasing use of lower-paid foreign crews, warning of a "drift of the Caucasian from the sea." Writing just four days later, Wilson expressed his support, stating that he appreciated "the deep significance of the seamen's cause" and would "espouse it in every way that is possible." Furuseth would become a leading advocate for the reforms that culminated in Wilson's Seamen's Act of 1915, landmark legislation that expanded labor protections and improved conditions in the American merchant marine.
