Description

Manuscript DS as president, one page, 8 x 10, April 13, 1866. President Johnson authorizes a temporary Treasury Department assignment, in full: “Hansen A. Risley, is hereby appointed to discharge the duties of Solicitor of the Treasury, during the absence of Edward Jordan Esq:, the Solicitor.” Signed at the conclusion by Andrew Johnson. In fine condition, with a light stain to the upper left blank area.

As the nation grappled with the legal, financial, and political challenges of reunification following the Civil War, the Office of the Solicitor of the Treasury played an important role in overseeing claims, customs matters, revenue enforcement, and litigation involving the Treasury Department. Issued during the first year of Andrew Johnson’s presidency, this document dates to the early Reconstruction era, when the nation was grappling with the aftermath of the Civil War.
