ALS as senator, signed “Frank'n Pierce,” one page, 7.5 x 8.75, March 30 [1840 or 1841]. Addressed from Washington, a handwritten letter to an unidentified gentleman: “If an opportunity shall be presented, it will afford me pleasure to comply with the request of your letter of Feby 28th now before me – but I have been informed by the chairman of the Committee on Post Offices and Post Roads, that no bill will be reported at the present session for the establishment of new routes or the extension of those already existing.” In fine condition, with a tastefully trimmed bottom edge.
Written during Pierce's Senate service, this letter concerns the expansion of the nation's postal network at a time when Congress was regularly petitioned to establish new post roads and extend existing mail routes to serve America's rapidly growing population. In the early 1840s, the Post Office Department was one of the federal government's largest and most visible agencies, with the Senate Committee on Post Offices and Post Roads reviewing a steady stream of proposals for new routes. As settlements expanded and demands for improved communication increased, many requests were deferred or denied because of legislative priorities and fiscal constraints.
