Partly-printed vellum DS as president, signed “J. Q. Adams,” one page, 15.25 x 9.25, January 30, 1827. President Adams grants John Gray of Coward County a tract of land "in the District of Land offered for sale at Franklin, Missouri, containing One hundred and eighty acres." Neatly signed at the conclusion in ink by President John Quincy Adams and countersigned by Commissioner of the General Land Office George Graham. The official Land Office seal is no longer present. Matted and framed with an engraved portrait of Adams (bearing a facsimile signature) to an overall size of 26.25 x 14. In fine condition.
Land patents like this conveyed legal title to acreage acquired from the federal government and played an important role in the settlement and agricultural development of the expanding American frontier. The document dates to a period of increasing migration into the trans-Mississippi West, as newly admitted states such as Missouri attracted settlers seeking land and economic opportunity.
