Description

The major figure of the English Enlightenment

Tremendously influential Scottish Enlightenment philosopher, historian, and economist (1711–1776) considered one of the most important figures in the history of Western philosophy. Scarce ADS, signed "David Hume," one page, 7.25 x 3.5, June 8, 1776. Handwritten check from Bath, drawn on Thomas Coutts & Co. of London and made payable to dramatist John Home for “the sum of fifty pounds,” adding, “and place it to my account.” Handsomely mounted, matted, and framed with an engraved portrait of Hume to an overall size of 18.5 x 11. In fine condition.

A remarkable financial document from the final months of Hume’s life, penned during his last journey to England in a vain attempt to restore his failing health. Hume had traveled to Bath with his distant kinsman John Home, the celebrated Scottish dramatist best known for Douglas, hoping that the city’s famed waters might provide relief. They did not. The very day after writing this check, Hume wrote to William Strahan that he had 'dropp’d the Use' of the waters, having found them injurious rather than curative. He would pass away from a form of abdominal cancer in August.

As one of the central figures of the Scottish Enlightenment, Hume remains among the most influential philosophers in the English language, celebrated for his empiricism, skepticism, writings on human nature, and monumental History of England. Autographic material by Hume is quite scarce.
