Description

TLS signed “W. P. Chrysler,” one page, 8.5 x 11, Maxwell Motor Corporation / Chrysler Motor Corporation letterhead, September 22, 1924. Letter to Coldwell S. Johnston, in full: “I have your letter of September 4th from Geneva, and am delighted to hear from you and to know that the Chrysler cars are going so well in Europe. I am sorry that it will be impossible for me to go to Paris and London for the Shows this year, as I have recently authorized the expenditure of almost three quarters of a million dollars on the Chrysler plant in Detroit to increase the capacity between now and the first of the year so that we can produce fifty thousand cars for next year, and this is going to keep me busy. I shall probably take a trip to Europe next summer for a couple of months. Therefore, it is up to you boys to put the job over in a high grade way in Europe.” In fine condition. Coldwell Sidney Johnston (1880–1956) was an American business figure known as the treasurer of the Continental Auto Manufacturing Company.

Written during the formative months of the Chrysler automobile brand, the letter captures Walter P. Chrysler overseeing the rapid expansion of production following the successful introduction of the Chrysler Six earlier in 1924. His reference to authorizing nearly three-quarters of a million dollars in factory expenditures to produce “fifty thousand cars for next year” documents the aggressive manufacturing growth that accompanied Chrysler’s transformation of the struggling Maxwell Motor Corporation into what would soon become Chrysler Corporation in 1925. The dual Maxwell/Chrysler letterhead further reflects this pivotal transitional period, while the discussion of Paris and London automobile shows highlights the company’s early efforts to establish an international market presence.
