Description

ANS in French, signed L. P.," one page both sides, 4 x 2.25, December 4, 1898. Pasteur writes a note on one of his personal calling cards, imprinted on the front with his name, address, and position as "Membre de l'Institut." In full (translated): "Received from Mr. Chéreau this July 9, 1878 the April 1878 [issue] of the Quarterly Journal of Microscopical Science." In fine condition.

The Quarterly Journal of Microscopical Science was one of the most important scientific publications of the 19th century. In 1878, Pasteur was at the height of his career, working on vaccinations for anthrax and chicken cholera. The address printed on the card ("45, rue d’Ulm") was Pasteur’s famous laboratory at the École Normale Supérieure in Paris, where he conducted much of his life-changing research. Here, he refers to Achille Chéreau, a well-known medical historian and bibliographer of the time. It appears he was sourcing specific international research materials for Pasteur to assist in his studies.
