Madonna’s iconic ‘Healthy’ crop-top photo session with photographer Ken Regan took place on February 22, 1985, at the Mondrian Hotel on the Sunset Strip in West Hollywood. Regan later recalled first encountering Madonna in the hotel elevator at 4 a.m., mistakenly assuming she was ‘a lady of the evening,’ explaining, ‘She wasn’t that big then,’ despite the recent chart-topping success of ‘Like a Virgin’ and her headline-making MTV Video Music Awards performance.
The resulting shoot became one of Madonna’s defining early image sessions, with Regan photographing her in the now-famous ‘Healthy’ crop top, rosary crucifix, rubber bracelets, lace-trimmed white skirt, beauty mark, and wild, teased hair. Regan particularly remembered the stripped-down nature of the session: ‘What was great was that no publicist was there, no manager…she was there by herself.’ He added, ‘That was the most successful shoot that I’ve ever had. Twenty-four magazine covers around the world.’
